February 2008

LOS ANGELES, CA - Sweet Relief Musicians Fund is offering a one-of-a-kind Clash t-shirt screened by Paul Simonon, the seminal British punk band's visual artist and bassist. In 1976 The Clash was about to release its debut album, The Clash, one of the first and the most groundbreaking punk albums ever. Simonon, chiefly responsible for the band's clothing and stage backdrops, silk screened t-shirts for the Clash's upcoming shows. In 1977 Simonon gave this shirt to punk priestess Patti Smith. Smith later gave it to her drummer, Jay Dee Daugherty. Daugherty donated it to Sweet Relief, so the charity could utilize it to raise funds for musicians who find themselves in need.

Sweet Relief originally intended to raffle this shirt to a fan --- a more egalitarian way of making it available to those who appreciate its unique history. Unfortunately, international and national sweepstakes laws forbid raffles without there also being an offer of free entry. Giving the shirt away would defeat our primary purpose -- giving financial aid to musicians in medical need. Although it excludes many people to whom we wanted to give a chance to own this, our first obligation is to the musicians who need us.

The ten day auction will be posted on eBay at www.ebay.com/sweetrelief from noon Saturday February 16 to noon Tuesday February 26, 2008.

Sweet Relief Musicians Fund is a Los Angeles-based national charity providing financial assistance to musicians who are struggling to make ends meet while facing illness, disability, or age-related problems. There are many talented artists who will never be rich or famous, but who play essential roles in the transcendent connection between fans and music. Sweet Relief tries to redress some of the imbalance between the few in music who have a lot and many who struggle but persist in their art. Please also visit Sweet Relief's MySpace page www.myspace.com/sweetreliefmusiciansfund .

Best of luck to all Clash fans who bid at this shot at owning a piece of music history. We hope that the winner will display or place it where other fans can view it.

Description
This shirt is at least 31 years old and might not have been new when it was screened by Paul Simonon. It's 20 1/2 inches (52.1 cm) from armpit to armpit and 23 ½ inches (59.7 cm) from the back collar to the hem. The inside collar tag is worn away on either side but says "COTTO" which we assume originally stated that it is 100% cotton (or there'd be another fabric listed), Size 36/96 cm, and Made in Pakistan (we hope not by children). The shirt can be described as faded off -white, short-sleeved, quite worn. There are red ink drips around the collar, body, and right sleeve of the shirt.

Please remember that colors resolve differently on different computer screens! The red is brick -colored (201 on the Pantone Matching System). The triangle shape is faded teal green/blue (322 on the Pantone Matching System). The photo reproduction is in black and 4 inches by 4 inches (10.2 x 10.2 cm).

The photo reproduction on the shirt is from the 1977 album The Clash, shot by Kate Simon, taken in the alleyway directly opposite the front door of the band's 'Rehearsal Rehearsals' building in Camden Market. Paul Simonon is on the left, Joe Strummer in the middle/back, and Mick Jones on the right. Drummer Terry Chimes, though a full member of The Clash at the time, did not appear in the shot as he had already decided to leave the band.

2003
Concert Ticket Auctions
The overwhelming generosity of artists and their managers made 2003 our most successful year for online auctions. Premium seating at concerts and "meet & greet" opportunities with a myriad of popular artists nationwide has made this a banner year for online fundraising. Our concert ticket auctions alone have accounted for nearly 1/4 of our budget this year.

Highlights of this year's auctions include VIP seating for Pearl Jam, Fleetwood Mac, and for Bruce Springsteen's sold-out Giants Stadium show; front row tickets for Elton John/Billy Joel, Tim McGraw, and Duran Duran; and unique opportunities to see countless other popular artists - including Justin Timberlake/Christina Aguilera, Wynonna, Norah Jones, Foo Fighters, Phish, and Bjork.
